I follow a bunch of fashion magazines on Facebook, just to
see what the current trends are. Today while going through my news feed, I saw
an article concerning the comeback of Birkenstock sandals. I am 1000% not for
this!
First of all, I feel like they never left the cultural
consciousness. They are the ultimate outdoor concert footwear. Ever since
Woodstock, the concept of wearing something simple to a concert expanded to
other facets of life. But unless you are Jerry Garcia and pair it with a
tie-dye t-shirt (also back in style, but that is one comeback I am all for!) you
might look a little silly.
I can, begrudgingly, see why they are so popular. Like
Crocs, Birkenstocks scream practicality. It is not difficult to slip them on or
off, and I suppose there is something to be said for durability and longevity. But
while all of these are good qualities to have in a shoe, I am someone who
desires a bit of femininity in her footwear. Just because “Birken” is in the
title does not mean that they are anywhere near the style content of Jane
Birkin (lady style icon extraordinaire).
Finally, although I am not sure that Birkenstocks look great
on women (or men really), I would not discourage someone from buying them if
the shoes fit into their overall aesthetic. If they go with your personal
style, do it! In the picture accompanying the article I read, a girl had paired
her black Birkenstocks with a simple black dress. This is the best way to wear
them; helping the Birks to balance with the rest of your outfit is the key. You
don’t want them to overwhelm your other pieces.
